I’ve sort of followed the projects of Tim Kinsella for some time. From Cap’n’Jazz to Joan of Arc to Owls, I have always been interested in what he’s got up his sleeve. If you’re familiar with any of his previous acts then you should sort of know what to expect; awkward, hurt, but in a somehow distant way; which of course only adds to the effect and to the believability factor. Listening to Tim sing makes me imagine that I’m staring at someone who is painfully hopeless with a blank stare on their face, yet veering towards a coy smile that could in fact turn to tears or rage in an instant. With that said, Make Believe plays angular, melodic, and affected indie rock that is inherently more interesting than most other acts out their. The lyrics are great and have a literary quality that truly makes them art on their own, “Original sin machine / We keep quiet / So we don’t talk like the television people talk to the dead / In the television cemeteries [sic]…Mirror mirror on the war, who’s the fairest keeper of score?” Every element here is played flawlessly and their ability to construct these songs, which seem to lack real structure yet are completely coherent, make this something worth believing. - Christopher
