Sub>>Conformist
Cool
kids playing punk rock with two bassists and no guitars. It doesn't get better
than this. Check them out April 12 at the Epicentre with Allotic, No Valence,
Pinwheels, and Unbound!
Joel:
What's your band's name? Band: Sub>>Conformist.
Joel: What's
your function in the band? Troy: Lead vocals and lead bass. Sean: Bass,
shitty backing vocals. Tommy: Drums and intensity.
Joel: Briefly
describe |
 |
your
music.
Sean: To me it is just good simple Punk.
Troy: I guess I would
use the dreaded “p” word as well, oh well, I’m not punk but I guess that’s what
would be the easiest way to describe it. Cause it sure as hell aint pop punk,
that’s just an oxymoron in itself.
Joel: Why should people listen
to your band?
Sean: I think people should listen to us cause we have something
to say with our music (like every other band) and we are not like all the other
bands out these days, where every song is the same.
Joel: How long
has Sub Conformist been a band for?
Troy: Sub>>Conformist has been a band
since August 2002. So not that long.
Joel: Where did you get your name
from?
Troy: I thought up the name, it was originally going to be a song
from our old band. It's about how punk kids at times conform just as much as the
people they hate.
Joel: What makes Sub Conformist different from every
other band out there?
Troy: Well for starters we don’t have a guitar player,
and as far as the local scene goes, I guess there aren’t a whole lot of other
bands out there that actually play punk music, it seems to be mostly pop punk
and emo crap.
Tommy: Two basses, one drum kit.
Joel: Is there any
message you try to get across through your music?
Troy: There’s a lot
of things I try to get across with my lyrics, some serious and some just cause,
like killing Sean. I feel it is important to cover the whole spectrum of things
in your music. I think it is important to write about shit other than your shallow
ass relationship with your girlfriend. As far as I know there is more to life
than your failed relationship with a thirteen year old.
Joel: Do you have a single song that has a special meaning to you?
Troy:
"Love and Pain" is my favorite song so far, I don’t really ever write
>love songs but this one is important to me.
Sean: All of them.
Tommy:
"Sub>>Conformist" is my favorite. It makes our band.
Joel:
What bands, people, books, etc. have had the biggest influence on your band?
Troy:
I would say musically it would have to be the Misfits, Groovie Ghoulies, Fifteen,
and Leftover Crack. As far as people and books I would say Michael Moore, and
probably a lot of other things I’m forgetting write now.
Sean: Rancid, The
Ramones, and almost all the old school punk bands that’s started it all.
Tommy:
White Trash Rob and all the Blood For Blood crew, Minor Threat for getting me
into this thing, book wise, probably Salad Days that is a very inspiring
read.
Joel: What about Sub Conformist
are you most proud of?
Troy: Probably just the fact that it seems to be
working out good and we don’t completely suck and probably just that we actually
played a show.
Tommy: I'm proud that we are actually a band, and we have played
show, recorded a demo etc, etc. I am also proud that we do what we want, I personally
have been told numerous times to get a guitarist, but we don’t want to, we do
what we want.
Sean: I’m most proud that as a band we all get along, we all
know how to play our shit, we know how to fit everything together, and we all
like good music.
Joel: What is the biggest thing about Sub Conformist
you want to improve?
Tommy: The only thing I would improve would be getting
a bigger fanbase, haha, and play somewhere else than just the Epicentre, and playing
with bands we sound like.
Troy: I’m pretty happy with where we are going right
now, all I want is to progress as a band like any band does in time. Any problems
we have now will be ironed out in time.
Joel: What CDs are currently
in your stereo?
Tommy: Blood for Blood, Misfits (old, with Danzig), the
Die September demo, Minor Threat, Leftover crack, a little bit of NWA, DK’s
Troy:
Probably Fifteen, Groovie Ghoulies, Leftover Crack, Green Day, Misfits and Bob
Dylan. But it changes constantly.
Sean: The Clash, Groovie Ghouls, Nerve Agents,
Our Demo, and Rancid
Joel: Do you have any closing comments?
Tommy: Thanks Joel for this shit, and thanks to everyone who supports us, and
thanks to everyone that doesn’t like us, FUCK You.
Troy: Yeah what he said.
