The
Bitches
Joel:
What's your band's name? Band: The Bitches.
Joel: Who all is
in the band and what do they do? Leslie: Guitar Kat: Drums. Anna:
Vocals and bass.
Joel: Briefly describe your music. Leslie:
Punk. Perhaps |
 |
something
like a mix between Bikini Kill and F-minus? ...If you can imagine that.
Kat:
Eh kinda fast and screamy, and I think leslie had a good answer.
Joel:
Why should people listen to your band?
Leslie: Because it's fun and you
can dance to it.
Joel: How long have the Bitches been
a band for?
Kat: Since about April (2003) I think.
Joel: Where
did you get your name from?
Kat: Anna came up with it in that crazy head
of hers, she'd tell you about it, but she couldn't make the interview...
Joel: What makes the Bitches different from every other band out there?
Leslie: We're all girls and we give a female perspective through the lyrics. We
also have songs that kids can dance and sing along to.
Kat: Yeah what she said.
Joel: Is there any message you try to get across through your music?
Kat: Of course, CHARLETON HESTON CAN EAT MY SHORTS! (hah just kidding).
Leslie: That females aren't just sex objects and that we can think for ourselves.
We are not a femenist band, but an equalist band. We also bash on things that
we don't like, for example: racism and charleton heston.
Joel: Do you have a single song that has a special meaning to you?
Kat:
Well not really a special meaning but I do like "Bitch Please" a lot.
Leslie:
"Bitch Please". It's about how women are seen as sex/pleasure objects.
Most people don't think of girls as really being "below" guys in society, but
being involved in the san diego punk scene has made me realize how little respect
girls really get. I'm not saying that all guys are jerks or anything, but I've
seen guys take advantage of drunk girls too many times. I've also had to deal
with crap from people about being a girl in a band... For some reason people think
girls can't rock as hard as guys or something. The Bitches will hopefully prove
them wrong.
Joel: What bands, people, books, etc. have had the biggest
influence on your band?
Leslie: We all enjoy the
same types of music, so the bands we listen to have a big
influence. But if we ever need influence for a song, we can
always just turn on the PA that mysteriously picks op random
radio stations and listen for inspiration.
Kat: As far as people? Ken Flaherty (a former teacher) had
a pretty big influence on me.
Joel: What about the Bitches are you most proud of?
Kat: Our first show.
Leslie: That we're all girls. It's about time some of us gals
in the san diego scene started up a band.
Joel: What is the biggest thing about the Bitches you want
to improve?
Leslie: Well, we are still a fairly new band, so we just need
to work on writing more songs for now. I'm confident in what
we have so far, though.
Kat: we should probably practice more to get new songs but
its all good.
Joel: What CDs are currently in your stereo?
Kat: Tiltwheel/Watch It Burn split.
Leslie: Hot Hot Heat, Rancid, and The Adicts.
Joel: Do you have any closing comments?
Kat: Thank you Joel!
Leslie: Kids in San Diego should keep in touch with the music
scene, other than just the pop-punk. There's a lot more out
there to listen to than just the mainstream bands played on
the radio.
