Joel: What's your band's name?
Greg: .maudlin.

Joel: What's your function in the band?
Greg: Play bass and rent vans (I'm the only one old enough).
Joe:I play drums and sing sometimes.

Joel: Briefly describe your music.
Joe: Stays crunchy even in milk.

Joel: Why should people listen to your band?
Greg: We're not watered down heart on your sleeve pretty boy, perfect hair, rad tattoo-core. I will be the first to admit, that our sound isn't original, but it certainly isn't a carbon copy of everything that's out there right now.
Joe: If someone enjoys hearing three people expressing themselves through their music, then they should listen to us.

Joel: How long has maudlin been a band for?
Greg: Est. Nov. 2001.

Joel: Where did you get your name from?
Greg: I have a neat little book of "lost" words. Maudlin means "tearfully emotional, foolishly sentimental, adrift on one's own tears." It's origin is from "magdelene" as in "Mary," who was often pictured as a weeping penitent sinner. We picked it for two reasons: we liked the way it sounded, and second, we thought is was a kind of tongue and cheek stab at the whole "emo" explosion going on.

Joel: What makes maudlin different from every other band out there?
Joe: The three of us aren't in all of those other bands.

Joel: Is there any message you try to get across through your music?

Joe: Find something in your life to be passionate about. For me that's music, but it could be anything.
Greg: Even though some of our songs are pretty straight forward lyrically, that doesn't mean that they aren't open to interpretation. Once it's out there, the songs become the listeners, therefore they can take whatever message they want out of it.

Joel: Do you have a single song that has a special meaning to you?

Greg: "Last Night." It's not on our CD, or mp3 site, but we play it every show. It was the first song that we wrote as a band. I was the last to join, and Mike already had 4 or 5 songs, but this was the first that we wrote together. Since then it has taken on other more important meanings. The lyrics were about Mike and Joe's friend Jay that was killed two years ago. More recently it has also come to reflect the passing of Jarrod Preston Adams.

Joel: What bands, people, books, etc have had the biggest influence on your band?
Joe: Since everyone always names bands, I'll name people and books: My sister, Rudiments of Music (Third Edition), The Little Music Dictionary, and Jarrod Preston Adams.
Greg:
Bands - Quicksand, Nirvana, Failure, the Who, Far, Fugazi, Hum, Pearl Jam (we're not afraid to say it), Jawbreaker, Cure, Joy Division, the Police, Nada Surf, PJ Harvey and a butt load more.
People - Parents and grand parents, many musicians and writers, our government... too many to list, and it grows everyday.
Books - The Education of Little Tree and anything by Michael Moore.

Joel: What about maudlin are you most proud of?
Joe:
That people enjoy the music we make, and that they like it enough to want more.

Joel: What is the biggest thing about maudlin you want to improve?
Joe: I think we should play outside of San Diego a few times a month, so more people can find out about us.
Greg: And write new material, but that's just a matter of time...

Joel: What CDs are currently in your stereo?
Greg: Iron and Wine, Lee Morgan, Sigur Ros, Stone Roses, Isis, Rival Schools, Hum, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, Queens of the Stone Age. (Don't tell anyone, but I love that missy elliott song).
Joe: The Tiltwheel/Watch It Burn split, Jawbreaker - Dear You, Coldplay - Parachutes, Metallica - Ride the Lightning, and Johnny Cash - God, Love, and Murder.

Joel: Do you have any closing comments?
Greg: Take the time to tell the people close to you that they matter, because you never know when they'll be gone.
