To What End

To What End is a rockin' band that you're sure to like if you're a fan of Finch or Taking Back Sunday. You should check them out at the Stand Up For Kids Benefit show on Friday November 29 with PBR, The Cause, The Classified, Underminded, and Spare Change.

Joel: What's your band's name?
Dan – To What End

Joel: Who does what in the band?
Mike – vocals
Allan – guitar/vocals
Andy – guitar/vocals
Dan – bass
Pat - drums

Joel: Briefly describe your music?
Allan: It’s kind of hard for us to describe our music. We basically play fairly aggressive music that combines elements of punk, hardcore, rock, and emo.
Dan: It’s melodic hardcore in the vein of Finch, The Used, and Taking Back Sunday.

Joel: Why should people listen to your band?
Allan: I think the music kind of speaks for itself. It’s just really straightforward, sincere rock, and I think people should judge for themselves.
Dan: It isn’t as generic as a lot of the stuff coming out lately.

Joel: How long has To What End been a band?

Allan: To What End has only been together for about 6 months, but all of us except Mike were in The Excuse. So we’ve been playing music together for about 4 years.
Dan: The Excuse was fun, but we felt we needed a singer that would help us take our music to the next level.

Joel: Where did you get your name from?
Allan: I think Andy just kind of came up with it and thought it sounded cool. People always ask us if we got it from the Thrice song, but we didn’t even think about that at the time.

Joel: What makes To What End different from every other band out there?
Allan: I think we try to rock a little harder. I know I’ve hit myself, and the other guys pretty hard throwing my guitar around and vice versa, and Pat is so gnarly he usually ends up puking after we play a good show.
Dan: We have a really wide range of influences. We all kind of listen to similar stuff, but Mike listens to old R&B and funk, and Pat listens to crap like Tool, and I like rap.

Joel: Is there any message you try to get across through your music?

Allan: Not really. All of our songs are pretty much about personal stuff.
Dan: I think that anyone that’s gone through a difficult breakup can find a song of ours they can totally relate to.
Allan: Mike writes about a lot of stuff that everyone kind of deals with, so it’s easy to relate to.

Joel: Do you have a single song that has a special meaning to you?

Allan: I know we have a new song called “Song for the Scarred” that really means a lot to me. Mike actually kinda wrote that song for me and him after seeing a lot of really uncool shit that was happening in both of our lives over the past year or so, and it really sums up a lot about how I’ve felt and stuff.
Dan: My personal favorite song of ours is “Fall to Nothing.” The lyrics perfectly describe the way I’ve felt and what I’ve been going through the past two months.

Joel: What bands, people, books, etc have had the biggest influence on your band?
Allan: There are way to many to mention but Glassjaw, Radiohead, The Get Up Kids, Tool, Marvin Gaye, burritos, Finch, Mike.
Dan: I think our families and friends have probably had the biggest influence on the band and us as individuals. We’re all still pretty young and these are the people that are helping shape who we are. And of course the hot limo chicks.

Joel: What about To What End are you most proud of?
Allan: Besides being November’s band of the month, I’m most proud of the fact that no matter how much we can play our songs or hear them I’m still like “That was fucking awesome.” And I think our stuff is only getting better.
Dan: I’m pretty impressed by the fact that Andy and Allan haven’t killed each other yet. They’re brothers so they fight a lot, but in the end their differences actually help to make our music a lot better. We’re also quite proud of Pat getting with two chicks at the same time.

Joel: What is the biggest thing about To What End you want to improve?
Dan: We can always be tighter. We’d like to keep making our live shows more rockin.
Allan: I think some members of the band need to work on their tuning skills.

Joel: What CDs are currently in your stereo?
Allan: Right now my stereo has a mix cd that simply says “Poop The CD.” I’m not very good at naming mixes I make. I’ve been listening to a lot of Open Hand, Thrice, Desaparecidos, Thursday, ATDI, Sparta, Beloved, and A Static Lullaby.
Dan: Lately I can’t get enough of GlassJaw’s “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence” and Taking Back Sunday’s “Tell All Your Friends.” Those are two amazing CD’s. Also I’ve been listening to a lot of mixes I’ve made.

Joel: Do you have any closing comments?
Allan: Don’t do drugs and follow your dreams. And thank you Joel.
Mike: I’m an Aquarius and I like chicks with nice asses.
Dan: I would like to thank Joel from SanDiegoPunk.com for being a cool guy and agreeing to father my children. Also I would like him to change it back to SanDiegoPunk.cjb.net. Pat’s not here but he’d probably say how much he loves Tool and beer. And Andy would probably say “Hey Ladies.”

The end g.
