Operatic

Joel: What's your band's name?
Band: Operatic.

Joel: Who's in the band and what do they do?
Freddie: Bass.
Ted: Drums.
Jesse: Guitar, vocals.

Joel: Briefly describe your music.

Ted: Rock
Opereratic
Freddie: As far as I know I’ve never heard anything like it.
Jesse: I like to think it’s our own sound, but we’ve mostly been compared to Jawbreaker, Knapsack, and The Replacements.

Joel: Why should people listen to your band?

Jesse: Just because they should.
Freddie: Because we work our asses off, and we enjoy it….so hopefully someone else will too.
Ted: For the soul purpose that it might get hot enough at a show for Jesse to take off his shirt.

Joel: How long has Operatic been a band for?

Band: 10 months.

Joel: Where did you get your name from?
Jesse: My roommate Matt Dove.

Joel: What makes Operatic different from every other band out there?
Ted: Dedication and sound.
Freddie: For me it’s that we pay attention to every detail in the music... Most people do bands on the side, we schedule everything around this band.
Jesse: I think we have a good balance of people that come from different backgrounds and styles which gives us a unique sound.

Joel: Is there any message you try to get across through your music?

Freddie: Not that I know of.
Jesse: Not really a message… More or less just stories.

Joel: Do you have a single song that has a special meaning to you?

Ted: "Unmarked", because it was the first song we wrote and I still feel like it's one of our best.

Jesse: "Unmarked"…it’s about my best friend growing up.

Joel: What bands, people, books, etc. have had the biggest influence on your band?
Freddie: Everything from early punk rock to hardcore to indie shit to mainstream rock stuff…..
Ted: Josh Vargo, because he shows me how to play drums.
Jesse: For me, bands like Fugazi, Ku Kim, Jawbreaker, Small Brown Bike….There’s too many to list! People: everyone I meet is an influence, and books I just really started reading all the time, but I read a lot of John Fante stuff….

Joel: What about Operatic are you most proud of?
Freddie: The commitment of all the people in the band.
Jesse: How far we’ve come in such a short time…just in getting to know each other and learn what everyone is good at.

Joel: What is the biggest thing about Operatic you want to improve?
Freddie: To somehow be able to afford a really good recording.
Jesse: Ted paying attention.

Joel: What CDs are currently in your stereo?
Freddie: I don’t have a CD changer, so it’s just one CD: Controlling the Famous.
Jesse: The Blonde Redhead, and The Cure.

Joel: Do you have any closing comments?
Freddie: We want to play shows in San Diego… That’s been the hardest place to get on good shows.
Jesse: Hope you listen and like.
