The Haven

What are your names and what instruments do you play in The Haven?

Mike - Guitar
Sebbie - Guitar
Dan - Vocals
Jerry - Bass
and Frank plays drums but he isn't with us at the time of this interview.

How did you come up with your band name?

Band- Out of boredom one night the "guys", which include Frank, Sebbie and a couple of other friends, decided to go ghost hunting in the middle of the night. They looked up haunted locations in San Diego over the internet and stumbled upon a haunted bakery in the outskirts of Jamul. They went there and found a huge broken down building with a huge sign which read "The Haven Restaurant and Bakery". The story goes that a girl hung herself in the basement of this bakery, of course, with many variations that all end in her doom. Our good friend Ian was among the group and he suggested the name, "The Haven". We automatically fell in love with it and were inspired by the eeriness of the bakery and the story about the girl. Although our song lyrics can be translated to mean anything you'd like them to, we have managed to translate each song in to a chapter of the story which explains in closer detail what we think lead to this girls doom. - The girl who hung herself in that basement at bakery.

Which venue in San Diego is your favorite and why?

Band - Definitely Soma. They are a really great venue and hold some of the best local shows. Len, the owner, was nice enough to let us use the venue to film our music video there.

In the next 5 yrs where do you each see The Haven going?

Mike- U2 will be opening for us.
Sebbie - We'll be a money making love machine.
Jerry - Hopefully signed to a label and touring. We've gotten great response from people outside of San Diego and we'd love to come visit them all.
Dan - Signed to a major label and getting payed to do what I love.

Who are your favorite bands/biggest influences on the music you write?

Sebbie and Mike - The Sound of Animals Fighting, Danny Elfman, and Musicals.
Dan- Dustin Kensrue, Craig Owens, and Chris Coraba
Jerry - What Mike And Sebbie said, just add Coheed and Cambria.

What CD’s are in your each of your cars right now?

We use our ipods so we have a lot but we will each do three...

Mike - The Bioshock Soundtrack, On The Record Broadway Soundtrack, and Say Hello to Sunshine by Finch
Sebbie - Serenada Schizophrana by Danny Elfman, Bone Palace Ballet by Chiodos, and Scary Kids Scaring Kids self-titled.
Dan - On Letting Go by Circa Survive, Across the Universe Soundtrack, and Under the Black Lights by Rilo Kiley
Jerry - No World For Tomorrow by Coheed and Cambria, Gypsy Punks by Gogol Bordello, and Elect The Dead by Serj Tankian

How do you describe your sound?

Mike - Its kinda like a soundtrack to a Tim Burton film.
Jerry - Its hard to describe our sound. I like to call it Eerie Rock but its not always eerie. You listen and tell me what you think :)
Dan - Epic Alt-Rock
Sebbie - I concur
Jerry - yeah, thats pretty good Dan.

How do you feel about the local San Diego music scene?

Jerry - It has its ups and downs. There is a lot of great talent coming out of San Diego but there is also a lot of people who have the wrong approach towards their music. We approach it like our good friends in Chasing Paper (RIP). Music is a community and NOT a competition. We play what we love and not what is a trend at the time. If more bands did this, we'd have an AMAZING music scene here. We're lucky to have made some great friends who see it the same as we do but not as many as I'd personally like to.

What is on the horizon for The Haven?

Band - TOURING!  New music, we've started writing for a new record sometime next year. We're also shopping labels and we'll be pushing our new EP entitled Under The Bright Lights until we're ready to release a new cd.

What is the biggest thing about the band that you want to improve?

Band - Playing more shows! We really havent had the chance to get out there as much as we'd like but we're definetly working on it. Our schedules sometime conflict with one another but you can expect to be seeing more of us in no time. Hopefully a lot of out of town shows. That would be great. Booking agents hit us up! We still haven't hit our one year mark as a band so we have lots more to improve.

Any last words?

Band - We just recently released our Debut EP " Under The Bright Lights" which is available through iTunes or using Paypal through our Myspace. We also have a brand new music video up for our first single, " Ordeal of Mind" you should check out. Thank you to everyone who has left us comments on our myspace or has come up to us at shows and told us something nice about our little band. You keep us excited to be a part of this band. We really do appreciate it. See you at a show!
