Shining Through
SDP: Who's
in the band and what do they do?
James: James Clelland plays guitar and sings, Brandon Holley plays bass,
Steve Dale plays guitar, and Tanner Wayne plays the drums.
SDP: Briefly describe your music.
James: We write pop songs. We like muddy, melodic |
 |
guitars, simple basslines, aggressive drums, and
loud, vibrato-ey, melodic vocals. We like structure and choruses but we didn't
want to sound like a band that came out of San Diego.
SDP: What's your live show like?
James: We rock out. And touch girls.
SDP: Why should people listen to your band?
James: Because we write sweet, catchy songs and we don't sound like Fall Out
Boy.
SDP: How long have you been a band?
James: I, James, have been writing acoustic songs with Steve for about 2 years.
Just this January we decided we wanted to rock. We knew Brandon and Tanner were
in a shitty hardcore band and one night when we were having practice, Tanner
called me looking for another guitarist because their guitar player left. I
told them that they should quit their band and come play with us. They were
into it, and drove over that night with their equipment, and we had our first
practice together.
SDP: Where did you get your name from?
James: Tanner eats a lot. His hunger shines through everything else he might
be thinking about.
SDP: What makes Shining Through different from every other band out there?
James: We listen to good music...and we're nice.
SDP: Is there any message you try to get across through your music?
James: Drugs = sweet.
SDP: Do you have a single song that has a special meaning to you?
James: '34' and 'The Taste of Ash' are my favorite songs. 'The Way it Was' was
the first song we played together as a full band, so I like that one a lot too.
SDP: What bands, people, books, etc. have had the biggest influence on your
band?
James: Max Bemis, Conor Oberst, Dan Keyes, Tim Kasher... I like to read The
Onion, I like Bukowski, I like John Steinbeck.
SDP: What about the band are you most proud of?
James: I am proud of the fact that we have been playing together as a band for
about four months and we have come this far.
SDP: What is the biggest thing you want to improve?
James: Not getting taken advantage of by old douchebags who own recording studios
and think the new Green Day record is "amazing".
SDP: What CDs are currently in your stereo?
James: I really haven't listened to anything besides Say Anything for about
6 months...but here are a few:
Say Anything-is a real boy
Say Anything-vs aids demos
Bright Eyes-digital ash in a digital urn
Bright Eyes-i'm wide awake, its morning
Recover-this may be the year i disappear
Cursive-ugly organ
Cursive-domestica
Pedro the Lion-control
Death Cab for Cutie-something about airplanes
UNDERMINDED-WHO NEEDS A BODYBAG. word.
SDP: Do you have any closing comments?
James: I want people to see our new EP, i shot out every light in town,
as a demo. I see these 6 songs as skeletons of what they could be, unfinished
due to a lack of time, money, and backbone. We were fucked around and flat-out
lied to by GoldenTrack Studios and Steve Wetherbee, and I want it to be known
that we are not happy with how the EP came out. Without getting into too much
detail, we did not get the time we were promised, I was forced to basically
do all of the vocals in an hour and a half, the computer crashed 5 times, and
there isn't a hint of production on the entire CD.
But this isn't about GoldenTrack. We accept the past as the past and we have
moved on; we just want people to see the EP for what it is, a starting point,
and to expect amazing things from us in the near future. We already have a few
new songs we are kicking around, and we plan to record 2 or 3 of them before
summer and give them away with the EP...so when you buy i shot out every
light in town, you'll also get some of our newest material.
I want to thank everyone who has helped us so far...we dont plan on stopping.
