Agent 51
On Saturday March 18, 2000 I was lucky enough to be able to interview all the members of Agent 51 before their set at the skatepark.
| Here's a list of who's who: Me, Joel (interviewer)-J Chris-C Eric-E Greg-G Mikey-M Jordan (Roadie)-JR Luke (friend of Agent 51)-L J- Why don’t you guys go around and give me your name’s and instruments, and stuff: G- Greg, bass |

J- You guys have been playing some new songs; do you have plans for a new album?
E- Yep
C- We got a whole bunch of new songs in
the works, we’re just looking for a label to pick us up and distribute us (in
a weird voice) “nation wide”, and a big band to take us on tour and make us rich
and famous.
J- You guys just went to San Jose, right?
Everyone- Yeah
J- How was that?
C (I think?)-
San Jose’s really good, we’ve gone up there a couple times so we got a little
following, it’s a good scene up there.
G- We got in a big food fight at the
show, it was great. That band had a bread launcher, like the band before us, it
was pretty sick.
E (cutting Greg off)- Anyways I just got my first tattoo,
right here (laughter all around), and I’m really proud of it.
J- Very nice
J- I have a friend in Phoenix who said he heard “Red Alert” on the radio, so how do you guys feel about that?
M (almost cutting me off)- THAT’S BULLSH*T, THAT NEVER HAPPENED!!! THAT NEVER
HAPPENED! (Everyone laughs)
G-That’s excellent, I didn’t know about that.
C- We send our stuff out to local radio stations throughout the Southwest,
if they play it cool.
G- We’re playing out there the 14th or 15th (of April).
C (in a N.Y. type accent)-The kids that hear us can listen to us, live.
J- Do you have a favorite song, or anything like that?
C- Inside the band or outside the band?
J-
How ‘bout both.
C- Outside the band my favorite song personally is… I’ll
go with “Back in Black”, AC/DC. Inside the band we got a new song called “Dominate”
I really like.
G- Outside the band I’m going to have to go with Weezer “The
Good Life.” Inside the band, umm, I don’t know.
E- I’ll just say too many
songs that I can name one favorite, but I’ll say our favorite song we play is
“Dominate”, a new song, it’s real fun.
J- I know SOMA closed down a long time ago, or at least it seems like it, but how do you think it has effected you guys as a band, and just the local scene in general?
E- Sucking.
G- I feel sorry for all the bands
that are trying to start now. ‘Cause SOMA was the cut and dry easy way to get
big in the San Diego scene, you get 80 people you get a big show on the mainstage,
and then you start selling more CDs and getting more people.
C - Now the
scene is like, at ‘Canes is the only place where the bigger bands are coming.
If you’re a smaller band it’s really hard to get on the bill for the big shows.
G- At ‘Canes you already have to have a decent following to play there, and
you can’t build one unless you play there. So it’s kinda Catch 22.
Everyone-
Yeah
G- And then there’s the Epicentre… which is alright…
C- The thing
with SOMA is like if you got two big bands together, like you say Blink and UL,
and they did one show, a benefit show to re-open it, you could probably raise
enough money to re-open it. That’s all it takes, just one show.
L (cuts in)-
Anything you can talk to them about you can talk to me about!
C- Yeah he’s
our publisher (?) person.
L- Seriously I’m their agent
J- We’re talking
about SOMA.
L- SOMA is closed down right now.
Laughing
J (Sarcastic
voice)- You sure about that one? I drove down there the other day and, you know
it was open.
E - It was open, open for business
G- Furniture store.
L- Its one of those Swinger clubs now, where people like pay 60 bucks to
join, and then like they can have sex there.
G - Furniture Club?
L-
No its SOMA, the Swinger club now, just so you know that, that’s on the record.
E- With the smaller bands coming up, their gonna have to have like staying
power, to like, stick around, there is a lot of bands around and they just go
out and play one big show and that was all they wanted to do. I think if you wanna
be successful in San Diego you just have to be around and keep it going as long
as you can.
C- And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that like a million bands
broke up last year. Like just after SOMA, like Against The Wall and a bazillion
bands.
J- Do you guys have any really embarrassing moments on stage or anything that you wanna share?
G- I fell off the stage last week (laughing) at Epicentre, I stepped backwards
off the stage.
C- I played with my pants down, like my pants unbuttoned,
not down, and I didn’t know.
M- I was playing drums once, I was playing drums
and my penis fell out, and it hit the floor. I went for the base pedal and I almost
stepped on it, I was scared. (Lots of laughing)
G - More scared then embarrassed.
M- Yeah, a lot more scared then embarrassed; I wasn’t embarrassed at all
frankly (more laughing).
G- We tend have a lot of technical difficulties,
which are some times embarrassing.
L- They tend to have trouble tuning their
guitars
C – Its called Agent luck
L- So we’re trying to start this fund
to get Agent some f#cking tuners fund (laughter).
J- How do you guys feel about Straight-Edge and Veganism and all that stuff?
G – (Super hero voice) Veganman!
C- Mike’s a vegan, actually.
M- I’m a vegan, and it rocks. Peace out.
G- F#ck you, eat burgers (laughter).
E- I’ll just say that I’ll eat meat, and smoke and stuff, but if you wanna
be straight-edge, you know, that’s fine, that’s great.
G- I don’t really
drink or do any drugs, but I’m not straight-edge either, I don’t know, its cool.
C – Transformers are his drugs.
G- It’s cool if that’s your way of making
you not do stuff.
C- If you wanna do that, that’s fine, I don’t think you
should make a huge issue out of it.
L – Each to their own, dawg.
G-
Exactly
E- The same thing, If you do drugs you shouldn’t advertise it or
make a big thing of it, and if you don’t then I don’t think you should make a
big advertisement out of it either.
J- That’s all I have for you guys so if you have any closing comments or want to say hi to anyone, or wanna make a complete fool out of yourself.
JR- Agent 51 is the best San Diego punk band ever. Thank You.
J- Alright, thanks a lot guys.
