Interview by Luke McCain

In the parking lot behind the side stage of a venue, after the California sun has gone down, lead singer of Fenix TX, Will Salazar, relaxes in his trailer before he takes the stage. With one leg over his knee and one hand on a beer, you can hear Allister still jamming just beyond the walls.

Fenix TX

It's another beautiful night in San Diego and another routine night for the "Before the Blackout After the Breakup Tour," headlined by recently united Fenix TX. In case you've been out of the loop, Fenix TX split early in 2002, only to temporarily reunite along side A Day at The Fair, Houston Calls, Denver Harbor and Allister, for this nation wide tour.

I sat with Will before his set, and as he relaxed in the bands tour bus, I fired off a few questions old (and new) Fenix TX fans might be interested in:

SDP: There is a rumor that you guys are considering coming out with a new album, can these rumors be confirmed?

Will: It's been such a long time since we have recorded anything and I mean, we really don't even talk about it now. I mean, I'll be sitting up front just listening to the radio and hear something and be like "Damn, I could put some perfect lyrics over that riff" and then all of us kind of just nod our heads and we're like "Yeah I could do such a better riff than that". But I mean, that's basically all that we ever really talk about. We just get our creative juices flowing and we all know that we could bring some different and new things to the table. But what I know, is that if Fenix TX did ever decide, I mean, "If" anything ever was recorded, like "new", I know that it would be nothing like what Fenix TX music is now. We have all grown up so much over the years and I mean, if we ever put anything out now, it would completely different. But nothing is set in stone.

SDP: What bands, if any, that are out right now spark your interest?

Will: Aw, man, I can't name any, there's so many. I mean, I'll listen to the radio and hear some good stuff but I mean I don't even know. Right now in my CD player I'm listening to Notorious BIG. (Laugh). Sometimes you gotta just keep it real.

SDP: Who writes most of the songs and where did the inspiration come from?

Will: I write all of the songs. The inspiration really just came from everything in life. I mean, everything. From girls to friends to just life in general. I just wrote songs based on what feeling I was going through at the time.

SDP: Okay, I'm going to get personal on you: If you could meet anyone in the World, who would it be and why?

Will: (Laugh) ANYONE in the entire world? Dead or alive? Hmmm…I think I would probably go with James Lipton. (Laugh) Cause he always gets to ask people questions about themselves so I would like to ask him some questions about himself!

SDP: I know you guys have played in San Diego many times, what's your favorite part about this city and can you say anything about the kids that come out to the shows?

Will: What most people don't realize is that San Diego is literally like a second home to our band. All of our members, at one time or another have lived out here. It's so nice and you can't find anything to not love about this place. The kids that come out are just truly amazing and I cant say enough about all of them. They always know all the words and are loud that's what makes playing a San Diego show so special.

It wasn't long before our time was up and Will thanked me for the interview. I thanked him for allowing SanDiegoPunk.com to do this interview and he nodded his head and told me to follow him. As I walked past the security guards and through the backstage doors, Will thanked me again and told me to enjoy the show. I turned the corner and found myself on the stage with the rest of Fenix TX and hundreds of kids faces looking up at me from the ground. I climbed down and stood front row as Fenix TX shook the venue with their unforgettable pop-punk ballads.

Whether or not Fenix TX ever decide to get back together and make another album, one thing is certain: They can still rock San Diego.
