Notice

Notice outside the Epicentre, 1-28-01

On Saturday January 27th I was lucky enough to be able to sit down with all 4 members of Notice to talk about their new album, upcoming tour, and other random things.

Adam - Preguntas
Joel - Well like first you have to say your names, so I know who's who.
Adam - My name is-
Joel - In your normal voices, seriously.
Adam - (leans close to the tape recorder and says in a normal, serious voice) I am Atom Ray.
Russ - (in the same voice as Adam) I am Russ.
Danny - I'm Danny.
Scott - Scott.
Joel - Alright, that's good.
Danny - Is that like, so you know who's talking?
Joel - Umhm, and I still gonna mess it up so…
Russ - How about we all just say our name before we…
Adam - Adam says… (laughing).
Joel - If you guys wanted to do that, that would probably be like the easiest thing for me.
Adam - Then we can mess with him and say 'Hey Danny says blah blah blah.'
Adam - This is Adam signing off
Russ - Scott says, "I'm a big idiot."
Danny - Okay, we're wasting tape, go ahead.
Joel - It doesn't matter… So you guys just put out a new album?
Danny - Danny says yes.
Russ - Russ agrees.
Adam - Adam is pretty sure.
Scott - Scott concurs.
(Laughing)
Russ - You used the word concurs.
Joel - Are you guys gonna say anything about the new album?
Danny - Oh, did you have a question?
Joel - Well that was just kinda a statement to get a response from you guys…
(laughing)
Joel - So the album has a disease theme, maybe you wanna elaborate on that?
Everyone - That's Scott.
Scott - The whole idea is "one name for multiple diseases," it means basically that a lot of diseases have all the same names. Take cerebral palsy, that's my best example, a lot of diseases, have a whole lot of symptoms, and all these symptoms get clumped into one name it's called cerebral palsy. All it means is brain disease, basically brain problems, and it's all one damn thing-
Joel - Are you a med. student?
Scott - No, I just thought of it (laughing). I think a lot. Basically the medical profession is bullshit and I don't like it very much. (Pause) My main thing is it kinda happens in all of life; you got anything, a whole bunch of symptoms, a whole bunch of problems, and they all get lumped into one area, a big, giant stereotype, the whole world is like that.Danny - And the artwork just kinda concurs with that.
Scott - Yeah.
Joel - The artwork is cool.
Scott - Thanks.
Joel - Who did it?
Danny - It was actually Scott's idea, but we all kinda came together and picked out the artwork we wanted to use.
Russ - Gary Bahen, from Accident Prone Records, did the layout.
Someone - Accidentprone.com (laughing)
Joel - So "One Name For Multiple Diseases" was a big change from "Middle Class."
Scott - Definitely, Scott says definitely.
Russ - It was a 263 degree turn.
Adam? - 183 degree.
Scott - 273.
Danny - Ok, is that gonna turn out like conversation or like "laaa, la, la, la, la, la" (he's referring to the band that was playing in the background)
(Laughing)
Scott - 273 degree turn for me.
Joel - So what type of things influenced you to change your style of music?
Adam - It's basically just kinda, you know maturing in your music. I don't think any of us had like any real direction- like we wanted to do this type of music. I think mostly it just kinda came out, and that's what came out.
Danny - When we started this band I was 15, I think you (Russ) were 14.
Russ - Yeah.
Danny - Yeah, Russ was 14.
Adam - I was 15.
Danny - Adam was 15, Scott was a little bit older (laughing)
Scott - 25 (more laughing)
Danny - (while laughing) yeah. So we played what ever came to us and overtime it just kinda changed to something else.
Scott - We never really strived for-
Danny - We never really decided to be one certain style, we just played whatever felt good.
Joel - Well there's some songs that I think link, like "Dinosaur" and "Again and Again."
Adam - Parade.
Scott - That's the one (Parade) that I think comes across.
Russ - I think we all learned how to play better.
Scott? - I think we started listening to better music.
Russ - Yeah, we listened to better music too.
Scott - I think Jets To Brazil was a big one for me, a big influence on this album.
Adam - It was Marvin Gaye for me. That's Adam speaking, Marvin Gaye and James Brown.
Danny - Too many for me to list, napster kinda helped out.
Russ - I got Hot Water (Music), Jawbreaker, and Three Mile Pilot.
Scott - Hot Water… Jawbreaker I thought was more the first album.
Danny - Smashing Pumpkins.
Adam - Led Zeppelin, for some reason I got in a weird Led Zeppelin kick
Joel - So do you not play any old songs at all now?
Adam - Hey there was an old song on the setlist tonight.
Joel - What were you going to play?
Scott - We were gonna play "Rehab" tonight, but it got cut-off because of time constraints. So we are trying to make a conscious effort to play more stuff.
Danny - We're trying man, we're trying.
Joel - (I forgot I promised my friend Joe that he could ask that question) Wait, Joe, ask the next question.
Joe - (I thought they were going to say no, so my next question on the list was) WHY NOT? Why not play your old songs?
Scott - We're actually trying to make a conscious effort to play the old stuff, because we do know people like the old stuff, and that's where we came from, and we don't actually… it's not that we hate it, it's just that-
Adam? - We're stoked on the new stuff. It's hard to play old stuff when you're stoked on the new stuff.
Danny - Especially when you only get 25-minute sets, like we did tonight…
Joe - (sarcastically) had to make time for Forty8Hours.
Danny - (laughing) yeah.
Joel - (sarcastically) It's all about Forty8Hours.
(Pause)
Joel - Um, I was gonna say something about what we were talking about, but I um, forgot… You guys are going on tour though, right?
Everyone - Yeah.
Danny - We're leaving ah, February 24th. We're gonna be gone for a little over a month, we're coming back March 25th.
Joel - So is this your first tour?
Everyone - First tour.
Danny - We've played out of state, but this is our first set tour.
Scott - We played Arizona, that was a real good show.
Everyone - (Sarcastically) Yeah.
Scott - There were like four or five people there.
Danny - This one is little bit more planned, a little bit more scheduled.
Joe - Are you going to make an attempt to go to Tucson?
Danny - Yeah, is that our first show?
Adam - Tucson's the first show.
(We go on talking about whether or not the show in Tucson has been set up or not and other pointless things that I'm too lazy to type up).
Joel - These questions suck, so do these (I had a few note cards in with questions in front of me). See I had like 3 note cards with questions on them, then I lost them all, then I found them again… Like originally I was going to do this interview when you guys played the last Acoustic Night, so one of my questions was gonna be do you like playing acoustic night?
I couldn't distinguish at all who was saying what, but this is what I heard - I enjoy it/I like it/ I think it's a good time. A lot of people come, it's free…
Scott - Free is always good. They have beer there.
Danny - And coffee.
Scott - AP Acoustic Night's are great. I recommend them to everyone.
Adam - Adam's butt is cold (we were sitting on those concrete benches right outside of the epicentre).
Joel - Alright so if your butt is cold-
Adam - Ah-ha
Joel - Do you have any closing comments?
Danny - Thanks for letting us do this interview.
Adam - I wish my butt wasn't cold.
Russ - Skip me. (Laughing)
Danny - We're skipping Russ.
Russ - Come back to me at the end.
Scott - Closing comments ah… noticetheband.com
Danny - noticetheband.com, there you go that's a good one.
Someone - I really wonder if you're going to be able to pick up all that conversation.
Adam - Dude that thing (my tape recorder) rocks.
Scott - I bet he'll be able to get it.
Joel - I've done worse.
Danny - Really?
Joel - I interviewed one band inside a record store with music playing, which was kinda like this, and I got it all.
Scott - So yeah, thank you very much for the interview, and we're looking forward to seeing it on your site.
Scott - Very good site, I enjoy looking at it quite often.
Russ - As do I.
Scott - Except that new sign-up shit (the new message board) sucks.
Joel - But that's kinda good, because it doesn't eliminate the shit-talkers, but at least you know who they are… Like you can look at it and say, well it's really only this person that's bad, but this person is cool…
Someone - How long have you been doing it?
Joel - A year now, like I started it in February of last year (2000).
Danny - How old are you?
Joel - I'm only 15, but I turn 16 in less than two months, I finally get my license.
(We go on again about stupid, pointless stuff).
Joel - So I just want to say good luck on tour to you guys.
Danny - Thanks, we'll try to check in on your message board, let you know how things are going.
Someone - We need show dates so check out website if you think you can help us out.
Danny starts quoting Weezer at this point (the sound clip on Undone, "so did you guys hear about the party after the show….") and we decide it's probably time to end the interview.
Danny - "Catch ya later man."
