I was given the chance to interview Off By One recently. Band members Mark (guitar, vocals), Jordan (bass) and Trevor (drums) had a few things to say about the following topics.

Off By One Explains Themselves:
When asked to introduce themselves and their instruments:
Mark: “I’m Mark and I play guitar and sing.”
Jordan: “You play sing?”
Mark: “I play sing.”

Kristina: How long have you guys all known each other?
Mark: “I’ve know them for about two years, but they’ve known each other for four or five years.”

Jordan: “Me, and Trevor and John all met in High School.”

The whole band grew up in San Diego and Jordan, Trevor and John all went to Valhalla High School and graduated recently in 2002. Mark graduated in 1999 from the School of Creative and Performing Arts.

Kristina: How long have you been a band?

Mark: “We’ve been a band for about two years and then a complete band for about a year and a half. Jordan wasn’t in the band when we first started…We played some shows with just two guitarists. We didn’t have a bassist. Jordan came along about six months later and ruined the whole name thing.”

(Insert lame joke about only having one testicle so the name still works)

They decided to keep the name even though it didn’t quite fit anymore - unless they do really only have one testicle.

Off By One Reflects on their own music:
Kristina: If you had to classify your music, how would you?
Mark: “Post Power Pop Punk with a little bit of a gangster rap twist – just kidding.”

Although they don’t know where the name exactly came from, someone once referred to their style of music as this and it just stuck.

As for who writes Off By One’s songs, the band explains that they work together on every one of their songs, just like it says in the CD case: “All Songs written by Off By One.”

Kristina: Do you plan on making this a career?

Mark: “Definitely. For as long as we can.”

Off By One Reflects on Jewel:

Off By One was given a chance to tour with modern folk artist, Jewel. At this point they had played one date, were removed from the San Diego date, and were looking forward to one more appearance with her.

Mark: “I guess she’s really into helping out new artists and new bands and stuff.”
Trevor: “We were standing backstage and all these people came like ‘the artist is coming, you have to get out of backstage and don’t look at her’ we didn’t have a bus or anything so we’re standing in the parking lot and we’re like ‘what the heck? how long do we have to stand out here?’ and an hour and a half later ‘can we come back in?’”
Jordan: “So basically we never got to meet her and she’s a bitch.”
Trevor: “Forty to two hundred and twenty dollars at the Nautical Open Air Theater in Cleveland. That’s bullshit. If you ever have to pay that for an Off By One concert, don’t come! Can you believe that? Two hundred and fucking twenty dollars to see jewel and she just stands there and complains about how she fell off a horse last week.”
Mark: “I started playing piano when I was three. Then I evolved into guitar when I was twelve.” -Mark
Trevor: “The first time he ever picked up a bass was for our first show” - Trevor
Jordan: “Well I played guitar before”

Off By One Reflects on Warped Tour:

Off By One had the opportunity to play six dates on the 2002 Van’s Warped Tour before the interview, but had even more dates planned for after the interview.
Trevor: “We had never been on a tour – the only tour we did was a week with RX Bandits – and we went on that and we were like holy crap. We played every day in like a million degree weather and like all these people and it was hot and all our favorite bands were walking around and stuff like that.”
