One Track Mind

I talked to One Track Mind before their set at the Epicentre with Against All Authority in August 2001. They're awesome people, and play great music, everyone should check them out if they can.

Joel - So you guys have been playing some new songs lately?
Drew -Yeah.
Joel - Do you have a new album coming out or anything?
Drew - We go into the studio with my friend Keith he's going to record it, somewhat produce it with the band. We go in September 21 for 3 days and than another weekend for maybe 2. I dont know if its going to be a full length yet or whats going to happen with it, but were going to do it as best as we can.
Joel -How many new songs are you working with right now?
Dave - Since our demo we have about 4 new songs.
Robbie- We have like 5 that are rad, but they dont have any vocals to yet.
Drew - We're going to be impressed with it, I think everyone is.
Robbie - It'll sound a lot better than the other one.

Joel - So are you on a label right now, or are you sending out demos to labels?
Drew - We sent one to Galactic Pop, they have the Classified and Camerica on that label, both really good bands. Hopefully after we record this we can get a press pack and stuff together to send off, and it's going to be the one that will get a response.
Robbie - We weren't really happy with the last one, cause it just didn't turn out that well. Dave didn't like his vocals, so we just didn't want to put that much effort into it.
Dave - Yeah, what Robbie says.
Robbie - So if this one turns out as well as we think it will, we're going to put all our effort into it.
Dave - I feel that were a lot tighter now then weve ever been, and that's the reason why.
John - Yeah, it's going to be the bomb.

Joel - You guys have been playing a lot of Canes shows, and bigger shows in general like Against All Authority tonight, so have you seen your fan base start to grow?

Drew - Since I've been in the band (6 months) I've seen a lot of changes, I notice a good, sizeable difference every time we play. We get our name out, people come to check us out, it's rad. The last band I was in, we didn't really get any people coming out.
Robbie - The army (of OTM fans), they keep bringing more and more fans, so it's rad.

(We had to pause the interview because someone got a phone call)

Joel - So how did you get onto this show tonight?

Drew - I just called up James (at the Epicentre), and he called me back a couple days later and told me he had a rad show coming up, so I was like 'Okay, cool.'
Robbie - It's been a lot easier getting shows lately.

Joel - So do you feel youre getting more respect now? Like, because you played a big show, people start to take you more seriously?

Dave - Since we've been playing bigger shows, our fan base has definitely been increasing. I don't know about respect, I think we get some more, but with that comes a lot more shit talking. But the way I look at is, that if you love us, if you hate us, the point is that youve heard us, the fact remains that youve heard us, and as long we get our name out there, thats all we care about.
John - It's like the old saying, any publicity is good publicity.

Joel - You guys have been getting some play on 92.1 (Independent Radio), as well, right?

Everyone - Yeah.
Scott - I was down there to talk about a comp I'm doing, and I got an inside track and sneaked into the sound room and put it on there, and they tried to beat me up.
Drew - But it didn't work.
Scott - Yeah, they played it and they liked it, and they were like, 'Hey, can we keep this?'
Dave - They played "Live Today," very good song, good message behind it.

Joel - Do you try to write a lot of songs with messages?
Drew - I don't know if we try to, Dave writes the songs and he really puts a lot of time effort and a lot of himself into it, and I think it really comes out. So if I can read it and see a message in it, I think it's really good.
Dave - I've noticed a lot of bands write a song, and it has nothing to do with them or they're lifestyle, and I think where we differ is when one of us writes a song it really hits close to home, and has a lot to do with us. There's even lyrics in our song that our personal, and have things to do with our lives.

Joel - So when one of your fans just finishes listening through your new CD, what do you want them to be thinking?
Dave - That's a good question.
Robbie - Yeah, hopefully, I want to hear that again.
Scott - I just joined this band, but just from watching them and playing with them I can tell there's something that makes us different, not better or worse, but just different with all the emphasis we put into our songs.
Drew - It all hits close to home for us personally, theres a lot of heart and passion in it, and we really believe in it, so that's what I would want to come across to people.
Joel - So you want people to be taking home a piece of you?
Drew - Yeah, definitely. I want them to feel the passion that we put into the CD recording it, maybe look into the lyrics and find a message for them that can help them out. I know that's pretty deep, but I just bought a Radiohead CD and I just felt all the energy they put into it just come out, and I was blown away. So thats what I wanna try to put out to the people, that were here to send out a good message and put out a lot of energy.

Joel - Is that the same thing with your live show?
Dave - With our live show, I think its a little different. I noticed that a lot of our songs that hit close to home have to deal with things like certain family members that might have passed away, or certain family members that might have whatever. So when you listen to the CD, I want it to come across that I'm pouring my heart and soul into it, and everyone else in the band is pouring their heart and soul into it, and I want people to feel that. But, when we play live shows, a lot of us really get into the show itself, and we try to strive more to put on a good show rather than get a message across. I know in our CD, I really want our message, whatever it may, to come across, but for the live show, I just want people to have a good time with what theyre hearing. People dont go to shows to contemplate what the lead singers talking about, and go home and think, 'Oh, maybe I shouldnt commit suicide tonight,' or whatever.

(A stranger comes up and starts talking to us)
Stranger - Does anyone hear have a cigarette?
Dave - Whats your name?
Stranger - This is Anthony.
Dave - Anthony is now in our interview.
Anthony - Alright, get the fuck started, what the fuck do you want to know?
(Laughing)
Scott - Where do you see yourself in twenty years?
Anthony - I don't know, I don't think that far ahead, it's too early to plan tomorrow.
Dave - Actually, we have a song that answers that, "Live Today," "Live today, dont grow up on your past."
Anthony - Exactly. Who are you guys?
Everyone - Were One Track Mind.
Anthony - Okay. What else do you want to know?
Drew? - Thats it.
Anthony - That was a lame interview.
(Laughing)
Anthony - Okay, now its' my turn to ask some questions. Where do you guys see yourself in twenty years?
Robbie Alive - I'll be 39 and still playing.
Drew - I'll still by playing music in 20 years, thats for sure.
(Theres a lot of talking at once that I can't make out)
Anthony - What's this shit (pointing towards my tape recorder)?
Joel - This is a tape recorder.
Anthony - Why?
Joel - So I can type up the interview when I get home.
Anthony - Why? Oh, youre that guy from that website.
Joel - Yeah
Anthony - Whats your name?
Joel - I'm Joel.

Dave - Alright Joel, ask away.
Joel - Okay, I'm just looking through my questions
Anthony - Are any of you guys gay?
Drew - No.
Dave - Not that theres anything wrong with that.
Joel - Alright, do you guys have any closing comments?
Dave - Check out Jessies website.
Drew - Loudspeaker Kids (http://www.geocities.com/loudspeakerkids). I just want to plug her website cause she rocks.
Dave - She'
s definitely our number one fan, she's been there since the beginning, gives us a lot of support.
Drew - She heads our street team, does a lot of stuff outside of us, not even asking her to do it.
Joel - Alright, thanks a lot guys.
