Piano Tribute to Metallica assaults the keys in San Diego:
On June 21 at 5pm, "Rock Concert Pianist" Scott D. Davis performs the music of heavy-metal icons "Metallica" live on a solo grand piano at the Piano SD Recital Hall,1233 Camino Del Rio South.
The show is part of a nationwide tour to support Davis' latest CD release "Pianotarium: Piano Tribute to Metallica." The album underscores the direction he's been taking his concert piano for the last two years. A metalhead to the core, but also with an appreciation for classical music, his CDs and performances reveal the complexity and intense beauty that fans of metal have always known and loved, in a light that can be appreciated by hard-rock fans and those (who until now) hear heavy-metal music as little more than noise and anger, alike.
Tickets are $10-$12.50 and available online at Pianotarium.com or by calling Brown Paper Tickets at 1-800-838-3006 24/7.
What: "Pianotarium: an Intensely Beautiful Tribute Concert"
Who: "Rock Concert Pianist" Scott D. Davis

When: Saturday, June 21 5:00 p.m.

Bands Wanted for Music Fest on Navy Base:
Hey everyone...
This is a benefit show to be held September 27th 2008. Please read the message below for info. regarding this benefit show.
The show will be held on the Navy Base at 32nd Street. More specifically at the RECYARD. The RECYARD is the Single Sailor/Marine recreation center.
What I am looking for: 3 or 4 bands that can pull off 30 to 45 minute sets. Any music type is acceptable.
Backstage Rentals will be setting up the stage, running sound, providing stage hands and doing the tear down. For those that have never had roadies, this will be a treat!
What the bands need to bring...Your instruments, your effects boards, guitar cables, drumsticks, your voice, your “A” game!
I am trying to set up a table for merchandising. This will be where you can sell your CD’s, T-shirts, etc. So if you have some of that, there will be more to follow. Free food and beverages will be available to all the bands. Be forewarned, it will probably be burgers and dogs….but it is better than nothing. Remember this is a benefit and no one gets paid. Even the acts that are coming down from LA are paying their own way.
My contact info: matthec@lpd18.navy.mil
Please email me with an mp3 that I can listen to, to get an idea of what your band's sound. I would prefer a mp3 that I can download as opposed to streaming through a myspace page.
Thanks and hope to hear from you!

Honest Iago to record::
The following message appeared on Honest Iago's myspace page yesterday: "Get
excited. We are doing a record. Soon."
What the specifics of that statement are is anyone's guess, as this is a
band that prides themselves on using live visual arts and never putting on
the same show twice. We'll just have to wait and see.

Cole from SanDiegoPunk.com looking for Drummer!:
Hey everyone...Cole here. I am looking for a kickass drummer to play with me in my band Exit 21. We are a edgy rock/punk band. Our main influences are: Social Distortion, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Bullets and Octance, Unritten Law etc...Our last drummer went to school in Boston a while ago and it is finally time to find someone else so we can start rockin out again. We are looking for someone who can commit to 1-2 days a week practice, has some good chops (vesatile, and has a good meter),not flakey, NO drugs, and is a cool person. It would be a plus if you sing too and are 21+ since we play a lot of bar shows but not a necessity. If you are interested and would like to get more info, shoot me an email @ cole@sandiegopunk.com with Drummer in the subject line. Hope to talk to you all soon.

Rat City Riot Interview:
Our friend Kim Schwenk was nice enough to share an interview that she did with Rat City Riot recently after their latest tour. Read below to check out the article...
On the road again… can’t wait to get on the road again…
Believe it or not, the Zombie Lounge, San Diego’s gritty hard-knock hang out for tattooed bruisers and beauties, gets a facelift. Despite a car driving into the façade of the bar this year, night after night of alcoholic abuse, and an occasional ego-bruised scuffle, the ZL for many regulars is the best bar in town, new paint job or not. If you happen upon the bar on the weekends, either you’ve been waved in, carded, or thrown out by Noah Bricker, “no bullshit policy” door guy and frontman for street punk rousers Rat City Riot. For a local band so well embraced by the arms of their rugged fans, the boys are actually marking the calendar days till they hit the road again.
“I think everyone can agree that pretty much we are doing exactly what we want to do. None of us really want to be anything else, but be touring musicians. That’s all we want to do is tour. Let’s go, let’s tour…Ok, let’s do it!” spouts guitarist Chris Barclift, while plucking away on his matte battle-scarred Epiphone guitar. Noah agrees and says, “It’s getting to the point where I hate being at home…” Really? “Well, I don’t have a place to live right now. I’ve got a van full of shit, a garage full of shit, and I’m sleeping on someone’s couch, ‘cause I can’t afford to live anywhere.” Drummer Nate Silverri adds, “I keep myself packed at all times, the clothes are out and that’s it, I’m really ready to go at all times.” That’s where the conversation turns to the “Rat City Riot Compound”, an isolated self-sustaining living quarters constructed on a parcel of land and a bunch of broken down school buses. “Seems like we’re missing out on some possibilities”, laughs Nate, after I brag about my desert land connections and all around wasteland survival guides.
Touring then, for the most part, colors the story for the band. It’s not uncommon for a DIY ethically fueled punk band to slog around the country in a gas guzzling van, accepting piecemeal, and playing for food, but to not have the merchandise to sustain the tour is another thing. After a piss poor relationship with ex-label Taang! Records and shady dealings, as Noah describes it, the lesson was learned. “What the fuck planet are you from not have a band tour with CDs? I mean, I expected some shady shit to go on (like royalty payments), but I didn’t expect to get fucked while we were on the road. We were literally starving out there without having any CDs to sell.” In addition to that, the line-up for Rat City Riot changed even in violent terms. “We had a bass player literally get “punched” out of the band near the end of the tour and we had Josh from Plastic Jesus in New York fill in” chuckles Noah. The stories continue with stinky and bloody outtakes, really if you don’t believe me, check out the video for “Open Road” and of course, it’s all in good times.
After the revolving door of band members over the last four years, the guys have hunkered down with recent drummer Nate and newly recruited bassist Daniel. With the exception of Daniel, the other three born and raised Californians all had musical inkling early on, enough to either play music or develop a penchant for the developing street punk credo within them. “I was in high school band for one year”, says Chris. “You were in high school band?” smirks Nate. “I had no idea, what’d you play tuba or something?” laughs Noah. “Actually, yeah, I played tuba” chuckles Chris. “I was totally fucking kidding!” Funny enough, playing tuba and marching band were not solely responsible for the leap into developing an affinity towards punk rock. Streetpunk, despite what education you may have about punk, morphed out of a reaction to middle and upper class art punks who cowered to the trendy superficial lifestyle, while like the original wave of Oi!, streetpunk included working class and pub brawlers within the inner city. “The way I’ve always grown up listening to hardcore and punk, it kind of makes me appreciate or us not overcharging for our CDs and stuff.” explains Noah. “Yeah, I mean the DIY ethic is sewn into all of us”.
Making merchandise affordable to the “kids” as Noah puts it, is their bread and butter. “Cause the kids are there to have a good time.” However, a band’s financial input can limit the final product in some cases, as RCR learned from the previous recording of “Dirty Rotten Games”. “I highly doubt we are going to get our hands on anymore copies of that recording. That kind of stopped with Taang!” It has been a couple of years, since the first record came out, so the band really just wanted to get something out. So the band ploughed forward to record the “Doris E.P.”, affectionately named after their old black touring van and available from Street Anthem Records. “Doris went a lot quicker. We kind of knew what we were doing a little bit more.” says Chris. “We also went back to the same guy at Ampersand Recordings (Kyle Thompson), he already knew our personalities.” But why an E.P. as opposed to a full-length recording? Noah quickly pipes in, “’Cause we didn’t have any money.” And before anyone else spoke, Chris clears his throat “We need an advance from a label (hint, hint)”.
As the Rat City Riot motto says, they formed in 2003 with the sole purpose of rocking and rocking they will do; town-to-town and country-to-country. There’s really no contriving the punk rock spirit within the band, after all they have seen and experienced even in four years, and hard-times are just another notch in the belt. Noah even replaced “Doris” with the “Millennium Falcon” passenger shuttle van, completely customized into a rolling band and gear assault transport vehicle. It’s all the luxury they need. It’s as Nate says, “You know, we’re just trying to live the life, as opposed to living a “lifestyle”.

The rumors are true. Weatherbox was about to go on their first national tour ever. Since they live in San Diego and the tour started in New York City, they had to drive cross-country to start this shindig with The Casket Salesmen. They arrived in NYC this past Tuesday when...bam! it happened. Apparently, some good Samaritans in Brooklyn thought it would be awesome to steal the band's van, all of their equipment, and pre-made vegan snacks ready to eat. Bummer. It was a bitter-sweet day. On one hand, the band got to release their first full-length record, American Art. On the other hand, they got jacked hard and thought they'd have to cancel the tour.
Weatherbox van/gear stolen:
Here's the release we just got from Doghouse Records:
Luckily, The Casket Salesmen are great dudes; they're letting Weatherbox use their equipment for the entire tour letting the show still go on!
However, if you have any information about the band's stolen gear, van, and vegan cheese, please contact weatherboxes@gmail.com. In lieu of accepting any donations, the band is just asking for supporters to check out their music at Interpunk (http://interpunk.com/item.cfm?Item=145076&)

More on the Off the Record Move:
SD City Beat posted an article in their Local's Only section on the Off the Record move:
Were shooting for a June 1 opening, but you know how moves can go, Peterson said with a laugh. The store will be about half the size, but the location is perfectright next to Claire de Lune. With its live music we have a great symbiotic relationship.
Most things about the store will remain the same . . . Sadly, however, the new store will not host live performances because the space is just too small. This ends a long tradition that saw everyone from Nirvana to Rocket From the Crypt performing at Off the Record.
